The Nakahechi route in November is unreal. Cedar forests soaked in mist, stone-paved paths slick with rain. Bring gaiters and no expectations — it will exceed them.
Book Chikatsuyu a month ahead for peak season. The village has maybe 4 places to stay. Once you're in, though — wood fire, local fish, nobody else around.
Nachi Falls is breathtaking at dawn before the tourists arrive. I stood alone for 20 minutes. That doesn't happen often on any trail in Japan.
